Malanka 2025
On 26 January 2025, Canterbury for Ukraine hosted a vibrant Malanka celebration at St Mary’s Church in Chartham, bringing together over 150 guests for an unforgettable evening of Ukrainian cultural traditions, music, and community spirit.
We were honoured to welcome Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Colonel Jane Carey-Harris TD VR, who opened the evening with warm and heartfelt remarks, expressing support for the Ukrainian community. Among our distinguished guests were Cllr. Marian Nestorov, Mayor of Medway, Cllr. Connie Nolan, and Ms. Anne Dekker, FLM of Canterbury, whose presence and encouragement meant a great deal to us.
This event was part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with Canterbury City Council as the lead authority, helping us bring a meaningful cultural experience to the heart of Kent. The evening was filled with the rich heritage of Ukrainian Malanka traditions. Our talented Young Ukrainians Hub delighted the audience with a captivating performance of the ancient “Leading the Goat” ceremony, a time-honoured theatrical folk tradition. Guests were also enchanted by the beautiful harmonies of the C4U Ladies’ Choir, who performed traditional ‘shchedrivky’ (Ukrainian New Year’s carols).
Of course, no Ukrainian celebration would be complete without traditional festive treats, which added an extra touch of warmth and hospitality to the event.
Such a wonderful evening would not have been possible without the incredible efforts of our volunteers, trustees, performers, and the welcoming community of St Mary’s Church. We extend our deepest thanks to everyone who contributed—through organising, decorating, cooking, and performing—to create a truly special celebration.
We are especially grateful to everyone who attended and generously supported our humanitarian efforts for Ukraine. Your donations and solidarity make a tangible difference.
