At Canterbury for Ukraine, we mark several significant dates that hold deep meaning for Ukrainians. These occasions provide opportunities for solidarity, remembrance, cultural preservation, and raising awareness about Ukraine’s history and the ongoing challenges that affect not only Ukraine but the world as a whole.
Day of Remembrance and Solidarity (24 February)
On this solemn day, we commemorate the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. We traditionally hold a solidarity walk through the streets of Canterbury, joined by both Ukrainians and Britons, as well as local officials. Through public events, discussions, performances, and other initiatives—which may vary each year—we express our unwavering support for Ukraine.
Vyshyvanka Day (May)
This day celebrates Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage, with the vyshyvanka (traditional embroidered shirt) as a powerful symbol of unity and national identity. We organise cultural events, exhibitions, and concerts, encouraging participants to wear their vyshyvankas if they wish. While the programme may differ from year to year, the essence remains the same—sharing Ukrainian culture with the wider community.
Ukraine’s Independence Day (24 August)
This is not only a day of celebration but also a reminder of Ukraine’s ongoing struggle for sovereignty. Our commemorations include a solidarity walk, performances, public discussions, cultural activities, and other events aimed at supporting Ukraine. We strive to conduct most activities in English to ensure our British friends feel included.
Holodomor Remembrance Day (November)
Each year, we honour the memory of the millions of Ukrainians who perished during the Holodomor—a genocide orchestrated by the Soviet regime. We organise memorial events, discussions, and exhibitions to educate people about this tragedy and highlight the importance of global recognition.
All our community events are free and open to everyone. We welcome all those who support Ukraine to join us. Event details are published in our calendar and on our social media pages.
