Speaking with Women’s Fellowship at St John’s Methodist Church, Whitstable

On 14 January, we at Canterbury for Ukraine were honoured to speak with the Women’s Fellowship at the above church at St John’s Methodist Church, Whitstable. Our Interim Chair Annette King, together with trustees Olena Nizalova and Hanna Hrekova, talked about the work we do to support Ukrainians in Canterbury and across Kent, and how we continue to help Ukraine itself. We also spoke honestly about the challenges people live with every day.
Ukrainians here in the UK are safe, but life still feels unsettled. It is difficult to plan ahead, work with confidence, or rebuild even some kind of future. At the same time, although people left Ukraine to protect their children, they left their hearts and families there. Every day starts with scrolling through the news and calling loved ones.
At this moment, families remain in Ukraine, facing extremely harsh winter conditions. Russian attacks deliberately target and destroy civilian infrastructure, leaving people without heat, electricity, and basic security, and forcing them to live with constant fear.
We also shared how deeply grateful Ukrainians are – not only for the support from the UK government, but above all for the kindness, solidarity, and friendship shown by people across the UK.
It was a thoughtful and compassionate conversation. We truly hope it marks the start of a friendship, and possibly future events and projects together.
Dear Lorna and all our new friends, thank you for the warm welcome, genuine interest, and the very generous donation. Your support means a great deal.
