Malanka: A Ukrainian Winter Mystery

Canterbury for Ukraine warmly invites you to immerse yourself in one of Ukraine’s most ancient and cherished winter traditions. This event offers a unique opportunity to explore Malanka, a celebration that has been preserved for centuries and continues to unite communities through music, storytelling, and tradition.

The Malanka project is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with Canterbury City Council as the lead authority. This initiative forms part of the UK Government’s Levelling Up agenda, which aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK.

Malanka, also known as the Leading the Goat ceremony, combines elements of pre-Christian rituals with Christian customs. Traditionally held to mark the New Year, it symbolizes renewal, unity, and the triumph of light over darkness. This vibrant tradition is brought to life through an engaging theatrical performance, authentic Ukrainian folk songs, and an atmosphere rich in heritage and meaning.

During the event, you will experience:

• • • A captivating reenactment of the Leading the Goat ritual, performed as a theatrical folk mystery play by members of the C4U Young Ukrainians Hub;
    • Performances of Ukrainian folk songs, carols, and shchedrivky (New Year songs) by the C4U Ladies’ Choir;
    • An immersive journey into Ukrainian winter folklore, where music and storytelling weave together to bring centuries-old traditions to life.

This family-friendly event welcomes everyone — whether you are exploring Ukrainian culture for the first time or are already familiar with its depth and beauty. It promises to be a memorable celebration, full of joy, connection, and the timeless spirit of Malanka.
