The Holodomor Anniversary 2024
🕯️🌾 On Saturday, 23 November, the historic walls of Canterbury Cathedral witnessed a profoundly moving event — a memorial service to honor the victims of the Holodomor.
The Holodomor, the man-made famine that claimed millions of Ukrainian lives in 1932–33, stands as one of the darkest tragedies of the 20th century. This landmark service, organized by Canterbury for Ukraine, marked the first-ever commemoration of its kind within the sacred halls of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The service was led by the Dean of Canterbury and brought together over 700 attendees from both the Ukrainian and British communities. Among them were local residents, clergy from various Christian denominations, and dignitaries, including Lady Colgrain, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Kent; Mr. Denys Demchenko, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Ukraine to the UK; and other religious and civic leaders.
A deeply moving highlight was the performance by our C4U Ladies’ Choir, formed of Ukrainian women displaced by the ongoing war. Their heartfelt renditions of Ukrainian sacred songs and the national anthems of Ukraine and the United Kingdom resonated through the cathedral, symbolizing hope, resilience, and the enduring connection to their homeland.
The service carried a powerful message of remembrance, unity, and justice. Reflections underscored the parallels between Ukraine’s suffering during the Holodomor and its continued fight for freedom and sovereignty in the face of aggression today.
The program included prayers, a moment of silence, reflections, and hymns, offering a solemn call to honor the past and act in solidarity to uphold justice and freedom in the present.

🕯️🌾 У суботу, 23 листопада, історичні стіни Кентерберійського собору стали свідками глибоко зворушливої події — поминальної служби на вшанування жертв Голодомору.
Голодомор, штучний голод, який забрав мільйони життів українців у 1932–33 роках, є однією з найтрагічніших сторінок ХХ століття. Ця знакова служба, організована Canterbury for Ukraine, стала першою в історії, проведеною у величному Кентерберійському соборі, що є об’єктом Всесвітньої спадщини ЮНЕСКО.
Службу очолив декан Кентерберійського собору. У ній взяли участь понад 700 людей, серед яких були представники української та британської громад, місцеві жителі, духовенство різних християнських конфесій, а також поважні гості, зокрема леді Колгрейн, лорд-лейтенант графства Кент, Його Високоповажність Денис Демченко, заступник голови місії Посольства України у Великій Британії, та релігійні лідери.
Особливим моментом став виступ нашого жіночого хору C4U, який складається з українок, вимушено переселених через війну. Їхнє проникливе виконання українських духовних пісень і національних гімнів України та Великої Британії стало символом надії, незламності та зв’язку з Батьківщиною.
Служба передала потужний меседж пам’яті, єдності та справедливості. У виступах відзначалася паралель між жахами Голодомору та сучасною боротьбою України за свободу й незалежність.
Програма служби включала молитви, хвилину мовчання, роздуми та гімни, які закликали вшанувати минуле та солідарно діяти задля справедливості й свободи сьогодні.
